Doogab Yi, Ph.D.

Doogab Yi is Professor in the Department of Science Studies at Seoul National University. His broad research interests lay in the intersection between science and capitalism in the 20th and 21th centuries, and he is currently working on several projects related to the development of science and technology within the context of capitalism, such as the history of biotechnology, the relationship between science and the law, and the emergence of the technologies of the 24/7 self. He teaches courses in the history of modern science, science and the law, and environmental history.

BIO

이두갑 교수는 미국 프린스턴 대학교 (Princeton University)에서 1970-80년대 생의학 연구와 대학의 상업화, 특히 미국 스탠포드 대학교에서 유전자 재조합 연구의 등장과 상업화, 특허를 둘러싼 논쟁을 분석한 연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 미국 국립보건원(National Institutes of Health)의 역사 연구소, 스탠포드(Stanford University), 펜실바니아 대학 (University of Pennsylvania), 과학사연구소(Science History Institute) 펠로우 및 방문 연구원, 그리고 하버드 래드클리프 고등연구소(Harvard University, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study)/옌칭(Yenching Institute)의 펠로우로 재직했다.

The advent of recombinant DNA technology in the 1970s was a key moment in the history of both biotechnology and the commercialization of academic research. Doogab Yi’s The Recombinant University draws us deeply into the academic community in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the technology was developed and adopted as the first major commercial technology for genetic engineering. In doing so, it reveals how research patronage, market forces, and legal developments from the late 1960s through the early 1980s influenced the evolution of the technology and reshaped the moral and scientific life of biomedical researchers.

이 책은 지식재산권의 정립 과정에서 지식재산의 정의가 어떻게 논의되었고 그것을 소유하는 것을 두고 이루어진 논의들을 구체적으로 안내한다. 서울대 과학학과 이두갑 교수가 18세기 지식재산권의 등장과 정립에 대한 역사적 논의부터 현재 우리 경제와 문화, 사회에 깊은 영향을 미치는 대표적인 영역인 생명공학과 컴퓨터(특히 소프트웨어) 산업에서 다루어진 지식재산권에 관한 주요 쟁점들까지 살펴볼 수 있는 논문들을 고루 추렸다. 여기에 더해 지식재산의 역사적 개관과 의의를 다룬 프롤로그는 지식재산권의 역사적·사회적 개념에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 책에 대한 흥미를 높인다. 아울러 미국 제약회사 모더나의 코로나19 백신 개발에 대한 논의는 지식재산권이 우리의 일상과 구체적인 관계를 맺고 있기에 더 많은 논의가 필요하다는 공감으로 성큼 이끈다.
